Voter Registration FAQ's

 

Who can register to vote?

You must be 18 years or older (you may pre-register if you are 17 yrs. and 9 mos.); you must be a United States citizen; you must be a permanent resident of Colorado 30 days prior to an election. 
 

Who cannot register to vote?

No person while serving a sentence of detention or confinement in a correctional facility, jail, or other location for a felony conviction or while serving a sentence of parole shall be eligible to register to vote or to vote in any election.
Any non-US citizen residing in the United States.

 

How do I register to vote?

Registering to vote is a right. It is available to all persons that meet the requirements. If you need more information or to obtain a form by mail, contact the Saguache County office Monday - Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 PM, at (719) 655-2512. You may also register to vote anytime you are applying for or renewing:

·         A Colorado Driver License

·         Benefits at State public assistance agencies

·         Services at agencies that provide services to disabled persons

·         Armed Forces Recruiting Offices

What are the Voter Registration Deadlines?

 Voters must be registered at least 29 days before an election, to vote in that election.

 

Are there deadlines at registration sites?

 Yes, at certain locations, applications will be kept and delivered to the Elections Department. Applications must be turned in at the registration site at least 29 days before an election in order to meet the registration deadline.


What are the Voter Registration Deadlines by Mail?  

Applications must be postmarked at least 29 days before an election, to vote in that election.


Are there deadlines at the Elections Department?  

Applications that are delivered to the Elections Department at least 29 days in advance of the election satisfy the registration deadline.


What information must be provided on the application for the registration application to be valid?  

Full Name, Date of Birth, Legal Residence Street Address (address where you live), Gender, and Colorado Driver’s License number, or Department of Revenue Identification number, or the last four digits of your Social Security number and signature. Also, the blocks on the top row of the application must be checked indicating that you are a U.S. citizen and that you will be 18 years of age before Election Day.


What happens if I do not make an entry in the party affiliation section of the application?

If you leave this section blank you will be registered as “UNAFFILIATED”. If you decide to affiliate with a political party you can indicate this change on the back side of your Voter Confirmation Card. Simply indicate the party with which you wish to affiliate on the back of the card and mail it to the Arapahoe County Clerk & Recorder’s office. Your registration information will be updated and you will receive a new card. Colorado is a "closed primary state." If you wish to be eligible to vote in the Democratic or Republican primary elections in Colorado, you must be registered with that political party.


What if I cannot sign my name on the application?  

Place your mark or an "X" in the signature box.

 

Do I have to re-register to vote before each election?

No, not unless you have changed your residential address. Note: If you have moved within the same county, you must update your voter registration record to show your new address. If you move to another county or another state, you must re-register in that new county or state in order to be eligible to vote.

 

Do I have to register somewhere else for city elections?

No, there is one central voter roll in each county that is used for all city, county, state, and national elections. You must live within the political boundaries of the city to vote in city elections.


How will I know if my Voter Registration Application was received and processed?

 Assuming your Voter Registration Application is completed correctly, you will receive a Voter Confirmation Card in the mail. This card will be sent you approximately 10 to 15 working days after your application is processed.  You may also check your voter registration status on-line by clicking here.

 

What do I do if I have a change in Name, Address, or Party Affiliation?

You must notify your Clerk and Recorder's office of any changes so that your voter registration record can be updated. All change requests must be submitted in writing using an approved form or in the form of a letter. Approved forms include: the back side of your Voter Confirmation Card or a Voter Registration Application Form. Letters must include your:

 

·         Printed name

·         Address within the county

·         Date of birth

·         Social security number (at least the last four digits)

·         Previous affiliation

·         Requested affiliation

 If you move to another county or state, you must re-register in your new county or state using an approved form.

 

 Can I register to vote by mail?

Yes. If you register by mail you must provide a copy of your photo identification with your registration form or with your absentee ballot if you are a first time voter who registered by mail.
